The 5 Loaves and 2 Fish and also the 12 Baskets

The scriptural foundation for the symbolism behind the blue logo containing the fish and bread. In John 6 we read of the 5 loaves & 2 fish account. We know also that John version of his Gospel is that Jesus is the only Way, the only Truth and the only Life. That Jesus is God, that Jesus and the Father are 1. John also starts of stating that Jesus Christ created everything thing and that He is the Word of God in flesh.

John also illustrated Jesus' Love for us: John 3:16.

Back to John 6 The people whom Jesus fed looked for Him the next day, vs 22, and searched for Him and found him in Capernaum. From vs 26-71 Jesus explains about the mana in from heaven and states that He is the bread of life, vs 51-56: Holy Communion.

The fish: Jesus fed his followers fish, he told his disciples to cast out nets for many fish, he made them fishers of men, he fed His disciples fish again at the shore when he restored Peter. Then 153 fish were caught. Fish became the symbol in those days as a fellowshipping sign for safety.

The round logo is the world, blue is the symbol for Holy Spirit.  Jesus' Love is the motivation for His compassion for everyone.

Matthew14 v 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.  14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said.  19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.  20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.  21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus used 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish to feed more than 5000, my guess if you add women and children it could easily be up to 15000 in other words many.

So what does this mean, why is this recorded for us to read? It is recorded in Mathew 14 v 13 – 21, Mark 6 v 38, Luke 9 v 13 and John 6 v 9. So in all four the gospels we have a detailed recording of this event. I believe our Lord wanted us to see the significance and possibilities and encourage us with this very powerful information.

Let’s look at this more closely.  Starting with, the 5 loaves of bread.

Firstly let’s read this together

John 1 v 1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.  5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.  7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.  8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—  13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”  16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.  17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

We can see here clearly that John is saying that Jesus Christ our Lord is the Word of God

And also the Word was God.

If we use this truth and then read the following scripture in

John6 v 32 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.  33 For the bread of God, is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6 v 47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.  48 I am the bread of life.

We see that Jesus calls himself the Bread of Life. And we should come to him so we will never be hungry or else we should come to the Word and find our Bread of Life.

So now that we see this what does the Word give us that will result in us never to hunger again! Let’s see in the Word of God what our Lord tells us more about this.

Proverbs 3 v 1 My sons, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.

Proverbs 4 v 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.

Joshua 1 v 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Revelation 22 v 7 “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

Psalm 119 v 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

So the Word brings us prosperity, long life, gives life, health, success, blessings, lamp for our feet and light to our path. If we search the Word thoroughly we will find many more advantages to follow the Word.

We see that the bread which Jesus wants us to eat is the Word.

Why 5 loaves and not 1 or 2 or 7?

Ephesians 6 v 17 we read that the sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.

Hebrews 4 v 12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

We know that we need the Holy Spirit in us so we can fulfill our calling in Christ and minister the Word of God to others and spread the Gospel. The book of Acts is full of scriptures of how the Holy Spirit filled new believersRomans 15 v 19 by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12 v 1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.  2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.  3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,  9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,  10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

In Genesis 1 we read that God created the heavens and earth and that the Spirit of God or Holy Spirit was hovering over the waters. And then God Spoke more creation in to being and speech is words so God’s Word created (John 1) and came from the Spirit of God or Holy Spirit hovering over the waters.

In this we can see that God the Father, Jesus Christ our Lord (The Word) and the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of God) is One.

We are instructed by Jesus Christ our Lord to: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We must go out and spread the Gospel and teach. What must we teach? The Word Of God or The Bread of Life! We all have different callings and ministries we read earlier of how the Spirit can manifest in different ways, in same way the Spirit also gives gifts to us in different offices to do work for God in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4 v 1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.  2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  4 There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called—  5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;  6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.  8 This is why it says:

“When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.”

9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?  10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)  11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up  13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.  15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.  16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

We can see here that the body of Christ consists of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers.

What is each Title for.

  • Apostle – Greek word apostolos meaning “sent one’, “messenger” “Commissioned one”

Apostles are witnesses to Christ The twelve apostles ( disciples ) and Paul all went out and established churches. Therefore apostles are called to go out and witness to Christ and these results in a church being formed.

  1. Prophets – Receiving fresh revelation from God about His divine truth

Speaking the Word of God with accuracy, as The Lord intended the Word be.

  1. Evangelist – To evangelize, to announce news, to tell others of news. Spread the
  2. Pastor – shepherd, someone who takes care of the flock or church members
  3. Teacher – teaching the Word of God

So there are 5 offices in the service of our Lord and we must seek our calling in these services. Some of us will do all and some just one, but they all link with each other.

Example an evangelist must be able to teach and when he receives new believers must know how to pastor and is also at times is an apostle. So also an apostle must know the same and also evangelizes at times. There are then 5 ministries, also known as the 5 fold ministry.

Therefore 5 Word ministries are 5 loaves of Bread of Life.

Now let’s look at the fish.

Jesus fed his followers fish, he told his disciples to cast out nets for many fish, he made them fishers of men, he fed His disciples fish again at the shore when he restored Peter. Then 153 fish were caught. Fish became the symbol in those days as a fellowshipping sign for safety.

TwoDeuteronomy 19 v 15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Matthew 18 v 19 “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.  20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” ---

Matthew 20 v 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,  2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.  3 If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

John 8 v 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.  15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.  16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.  17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.  18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

Mark 6 v 6 Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.  7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.

8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.  9 Wear sandals, but not an extra tunic.  10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.  11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them. Truly I say to you, It will be more bearable for Sodom or Gomorrah in Judgment Day than for that city.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.  13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Fish –                 Matthew 4 v 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Mark 1 v 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus refer to spreading of the Gospel as a being fishers of men

Let’s read Mark 6 v 38 which follows after Jesus sent His disciples out two by two.

Mark 6 v 38 He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fish.

Twelve baskets full represents the 12 twelve tribes of Israel, who are the twelve sons of Jacob son of Isaac, son of Abraham to whom God made a promise Genesis 15 v 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir.”  5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Jacob had twelve sons:

Genesis 35 v 23 The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

25 The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.

26 The sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah: Gad and Asher.

These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

Then if only 2 willing disciples, who are in Christ filled with the Holy Spirit with the Word of God in both their hearts, have the knowledge of the 5 Word (Bread of Life) ministries and go into the world will feed many (+15000) and ultimately bring them the free gift of eternal life of our Lord God.

Let’s see how this is used in the field. Firstly when 2 are “sent out” into the harvest fields of the Father, they have to evangelize (1). Only when the lost come to Christ can they then Pastor (2) them, as they are Pastored, teaching (3) takes place. While they are teaching the new believers, God’s Word will be ministered and Prophetic (4) Word will bring change, conviction and encouragement to those in the new church, as the church is manifested the original disciples are ready to be “sent out” {Apostolic (5)} to start the whole cycle again.

Please be willing!!!

The Great Commission

Matthew 9 v 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.  36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Luke 10 v 1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.  2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.  3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Without Love it will not Work

Love never fails! Faith Works through Love. We must strive with our daily walk to allow Jesus to Love through us and be Love.

Read the Word of God

I would appeal to you all to start reading the Bible. I have asked many who call themselves Christians or believe in Jesus Christ, but hardly read or don't read the Bible at all. How can this be? Have you forgotten that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. ( John 1:1). How can we say we believe in God, but not read His Word?

The Holy Spirit is always willing to bring clarity over His Word. Just ask.
